Mummy Time: Jessica Johnson

Although I am sad to have missed out on a recent opportunity to meet Jessica, along with some other amazing mums of Instagram, I don't need to have met her to know that she is a sweet and gentle soul. This 21 year old mama to six month old Luna shares a little bit about her experience in this week's post. I am sorry that this is a day late but I hope you enjoy reading.

Who are you?
Hi, my name is Jessica, although everyone usually just calls me Jess. I'm 21 and I'm currently living in the suburbs of Bristol with my other half, Mike, and our six month old, Luna Iris, who entered the world on October 11th 2014.

What do you do for a living?
I'm a stay at home mama for now and I love it. I will be starting university in September but I'm not sure how I feel about it. I think I'm apprehensive about leaving Luna in nursery and worrying about how I'm going to get assignments done.

How are you?
I'm okay. I'm just a bit stressed about not having any money, the house being a mess and Luna has stopped sleeping through the night, so I'm tired.

What do you do to relax?
I'm not sure I get time to relax but if I can I'll binge on tv shows or have a childless bath.

How was your pregnancy?
I had a lovely, straightforward pregnancy. I was lucky in the first trimester to have only been sick a few times but I did have nausea a little more frequently. I thought I was carrying a boy but everyone else always said girl and at the 20 week scan I found out that, obviously, they were right. No mother’s intuition here. I think we finally decided on Luna’s name when I was about 25 weeks pregnant. It definitely felt like we went through every girls name there ever was before we finally agreed on one but I do love it. I craved chocolate raisins a lot, I don’t know why but they were the best thing ever and Mike would always buy me some on his way home. My only complaint in the third trimester was rib pain but I was also a little concerned because I didn’t get any braxton hicks and I was worried my body wasn’t getting ready for labour, turns out I really had no need to worry about that. The most annoying part of pregnancy for me was finding clothes that fit, all my maternity jeans fell down so I pretty much lived in leggings or dresses.  I loved being pregnant and I'm looking forward to doing it again!

How did your prepare for Luna's arrival?
I researched everything on the Internet and I read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, which I loved and would recommend to any expectant mama.

How was your labour?
I was lucky, my labour was quick and uncomplicated. My waters broke early in the morning but my contractions didn’t start properly until mid-afternoon. I was in A LOT of pain straight away and I could not do anything but breathe through each contraction, they were coming thick and fast. I fainted during a particularly bad one and ended up in hospital, not the nice, relaxed homebirth I had planned. I coped on just gas and air as it seemed to take all the pain away, not that I would have had time for anything else anyway. I arrived at the hospital needing to push and about half an hour later, Luna was born.

How did you get on with breastfeeding?
Unfortunately, it didn't work out for us. I was pretty upset about it at the time and even though Luna is thriving, I still feel sad about it now. I'm hoping I get to experience breastfeeding next time.

What does Luna eat?
We've recently started baby led weaning and there is a lot of mess! Luna still has her usual milk feeds but we give her finger foods in between. I think some of her favourite foods so far are cucumber, frozen banana and strawberries.

Does Luna have a sleep routine?
Luna used to, she would nap every two hours and then she would sleep from about 8pm until 7am, have a feed and then go back down until 11am, it was bliss! Until she hit 5 months and suddenly her nights have become quite unsettled and she wakes up at 3am for a feed before getting up sometime between half 6 and 8am.

Does Luna have a favourite toy?
Luna loves everything she's not allowed, like my phone or the laptop. I think her favourite actual toy is probably her bunny rabbit.

What was your most recent baby-related purchase?
I bought a Hevea dummy with little ducks on it because Luna needed a new one.

What's been the most useful thing you've discovered?
The Lion King's Hakuna Matata video on YouTube. Luna is mesmerised and it stops her crying almost every time.

What is Luna’s mode of transport?
I usually carry Luna everywhere in her Ergobaby carrier. I love it! I can babywear for most of the day before my shoulders begin to ache and it’s the easiest way to travel on public transport, if you rely on it like me. I do have a Quinny Zapp Xtra2, which I’ve found to be a great pushchair but is only really used if I’m going to buy groceries and don’t want to carry them home.

Where are your favourite places to shop for baby clothes?
I buy from H&M the most but Luna also has things from Next, Sainsbury's TU and Boots Mini Club.

What do you wish you'd known before you had a baby?
I wish I’d known that nothing ever goes to plan and to always ask for help if I need it, I don’t think I’m very good at that.

Do you have any tips you’d like to share with other mums or expectant mums?
I definitely think all mamas should have a baby carrier, sling or wrap, it’s honestly the best thing I’ve bought, for so many reasons and Luna is much happier when she’s being carried.

I'm sorry that this was a day late Jessica, but thank you so very much for sharing.

P.S. My Chapter One giveaway ends at 6pm tonight the 15th of May.

P.P.S. I recently discovered this inspiring Ted Talk called The Power of Introverts by Susan Cain. I shared it with Jessica as she describes herself as introverted and she loved it as much as I did. Have you seen it? Did you just watch it? Let me know what you thought! A Twitter friend is sending me her copy of Susan's book, Quiet, and I can't wait to read it.
