Pic of the week: #37

This week I went back to work after thirteen months of maternity leave. There was heartache, tears and a McDonalds trip where I couldn't even eat my veg burger. There was the feeling awkward and not feeling like I have anything to talk about. There was the resisting to turn around to my maternity cover to show him a picture of Joseph. There was difficulty concentrating, phone-checking, wondering what Joseph was doing, and contemplating whether I should be working at all.

Logistically, this week was actually quite manageable, with Friday being the only day I was a little late due to Canterbury traffic. Monday was Joseph's nursery day and was straightforward as his nursery is in the business park where I work. Although he cried when I handed him over to his key worker, she assured me that he was coping really well when I called throughout the day and commented that he was like a different boy compared to his settling in sessions. Such a relief! I wanted to spend my lunch break with him but she suggested I keep away in case it upsets him again and he can't settle in the afternoon. On Tuesday his granny collected him and dropped him back in time for tea; logistical bliss. Wednesday was my day off but I had an appointment first thing in the morning that Joseph couldn't come to so I had to drop him to my mums for 1.5 hours. Afterwards, I took him to be weighed and to a baby group and in the late afternoon we went to Water Babies for the first time in three weeks. At 19lb 3oz, Joseph is currently between the 9th and 25th centile, which is close to where he was when he was born - little! Ruari had him on Thursday and took him to Folkestone after Joseph had a snooze on his chest, and on Friday it was my mum and brother's turn to be worn out!

My highlights have been having breakfast with Joseph in the mornings before the rush to get him dressed. On Thursday he stuck a Cheerio to his forehead and thought it was the funniest thing ever. It was so very sweet and I thank him for the semi-productive day I had at work that day.

I'd say that, in hindsight, overall my first week back wasn't too bad and I enjoyed having the Wednesday off to break it up. I feel a bit of a cheat as it's Bank Holiday Monday tomorrow so I only have a three day week this week

I hope you've had a good week! x

  1. I felt the same going back to work, it's tough, but it gets easier. It's the small things in life isn't it?! The Cheerio pics are super cute. Enjoying breakfast together is so nice...

Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to leave a comment. It really means a lot! Nicki x
